I try not to think about this too hard because it pisses me off.
But the typical, usual person who buys a Basquiat is some rich white person. Usually. Some rich little person who is probably the type to base their sense of self-worth on buying such expensive shit. Someone who probably doesn’t understand that the white “high” art world is what Basquiat seemed to despise the most. The reason he would mutilate his own work, like stepping on it, a proverbial fuck-you to the people pressuring him to make more stuff, to churn work out, to be a puppet. Those kind of people would come to him like he was their plaything, ask him for a piece to match their new sofa, as if his body of work hadn’t come from his need to express and his vast sense of awareness. And he would throw things at those people from his window after they left, he hated that kind of shit. People making him a commodity.I think that’s the kind of stuff that drove him to wear expensive armani suit barefoot and get paint all over them. There were all of these rich folk suddenly giving a shit about his work, or more importantly, the value of it, to the point where he couldn’t trust a damn soul. Shit, the people around him didn’t even get him help quickly enough to possibly save his life, and when he died, his “friends” raided the dumpsters outside for anything of his stuff to sell to these fucking rich greedy collectors. I don’t even think most of them realize how black and not exactly pro-white his work is. A lot of his work is a direct criticism of THEM. The fucking irony. Like uuugghh I know I’m rambling but, to me, the white art world and its greed drove him to his demise. So when I see these pieces sell I see people spitting on his grave or driving him further into the earth.

I always wondered about the school system if they allow 10 year olds to pretty much be on their own to be trainers.
And who gets to be a trainer? Any old kid, a kid with money, who?
I assume a test has to be passed
if we’re talking SERIOUSLY dystopic, then there’s probably some way they convince more lower-income children to get into being trainers… BUT you make it trendy so that you have people who blow their whole life savings trying to be the best and then you have well-off kids who just want the trappings of it all.
